Evolution Korea

For a long time, Korea's scientific community has refrained from engaging with the creationists, fearing that it could increase the credibility of the movement. Silence is no longer a viable option.

The STR has been battling to remove content from textbooks that discuss evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestral bird's ancestor. This is only one example of the way in which the development paradigm has changed.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a concept in science that explains changes in genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based on the fact that living creatures adapt to their environment, which can lead to variations in genes or whole genomes. Over time these changes could result in the emergence of new species. The prevailing theory of evolution is called natural selection, which explains the process that allows individuals with advantageous characteristics survive and reproduce more often than those with disadvantages. As time passes, this difference in reproduction could result in the creation of completely new species.

The word "evolution" originates from the Latin word for unrolling or revealing, but the concept itself has a myriad of meanings over the years as it has taken form in the sciences and in other fields. Some early evolutionists, including Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that existing species transformed into other species in a predetermined fashion. The term transmutation was coined by Lamarck's disciple, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, to describe this view. Despite the fact that evolution has stood the test of time and a multitude of scientific experiments Creationists have taken advantage of the idea that evolution is controversial to argue that it should not be taught in school. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories over evolution in high school textbooks. This includes the removal of references about the evolutionary history of humans and Archaeopteryx which is a feathered dinosaur which is believed to be the ancestor of birds.

Why is Evolution Important?

Evolution is the explanation for the origins of Earth and all living species. It is also one of the foundations of biology and helps scientists understand how living things work and develop. Evolution also shows the connections between different species. Scientists study evolution to better comprehend nature and make valuable discoveries, such as the development of new treatments.

The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that can explain so many aspects of the universe and life on earth and has been rigorously tested and confirmed over many years. Many people, including religious leaders, support the scientific theory of evolution. It is important to remember that evolutionary biology isn't in conflict with religious beliefs as it only focuses on physical objects, events and processes.

Many religious people have found a way to reconcile evolution with their convictions. For instance certain Christians believe that God created the universe through evolution and that humans have an ancestry with other animals.

What is Creationism?

Creationists are people who believe that God created the universe and all that is in it. They also believe the Bible is God's word and should be interpreted in a literal manner. Although Creationists may not all be Christian, they are a majority. Creationists are generally divided into two groups: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.

The most well-known type of creationist is the YEC. They believe that God created the universe exactly in the way that is described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the first six days of creation was true and that the universe and the life on Earth were only created recently.

OECs are less well known however they're just as enthusiastic about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe the universe and Earth are billions-of-years old and that evolution is a myth.

Both forms of creationism deny that scientific principles like natural selection and abiogenesis are able to explain the origin of life on Earth. They argue that evolution is impossible because it requires the creation of a miracle, and the pioneers of modern science eschewed miracles for fear that they would lose credibility.

Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution as well as special creation. They refer to their belief as "theistic evolution." This is sometimes known as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the original species." This theory states that God creates original species and then allows them to evolve over time. Then these evolutionary changes will result in new species like the original ones.

Other creationists believe that God created the universe and all living things during a single event, known as the Great Flood. They believe that all the species of the beginning were created at the same time and then gradually evolved. They deny the notion of abiogenesis, and argue that self-replicating life cannot arise from non-living matter.

In general, creationists are against teaching evolution at schools. This is supported by a myriad of professional associations which include the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education and the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, certain academic institutions and scientists are more flexible, and allow the inclusion of both evolution and creationism in their curricula.

What is Creationism?

When people think of the concept of the concept of creationism, a lot think of the United States. However, South Korea is also the home of an anti-evolutionist movement. Publishers of high school textbooks have recently declared that they will be removing references to evolution from their editions. A group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research, has led the drive. The STR has won its first victory by removing from textbooks evidence of the evolution and ancestor of the avian, the Archeopteryx. Its next target is to eliminate excerpts from Darwin’s infamous finch-research as well as on human evolution.

STR claims that it has the backing of 4,000 families as well as individual members. The goal, according to STR, is to rid the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" that paints an image of students as being negative. It also hopes to combat the influence of American creationists in the country. A survey of trainee biology teachers found that about half do not believe in the concept of evolution. The reasons for this aren't entirely certain, but could be related to religion or the absence of creation scientists in the US.

The KACR accomplished a number of things through its seminars and lectures in the past. It publishes a bimonthly magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of them was an educational textbook on natural sciences with a creationist stance. This sparked an interest among college communities. In 1991 an academic and minister started teaching Creation Science in one university and it continues to be taught until today.

On August 6th and 7th of 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. The event was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of over a thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given talks on the subject of creation science at major seminaries. KACR intends to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
