How to Replace an audi replacement key cost G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can start spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync, possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It is a little tricky to test since there are several pins on the connector, and each one has different functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. Examine for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed, i noticed a huge drop in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole, and when I start the engine without sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found 0ohm. So i assume the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car can start when the G28 is disconnected and runs fine when it is plugged in but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do, but i think i've pretty much eliminated everything else. But i'm worried that I might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or at a parts store. It is simple to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of fuel injectors, etc. To accomplish this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you encounter a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could lead to an engine shut down.

A failing G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter or a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, and/or a misfire in the gear. It is likely that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you experience any of these signs. They are cheap and easy-to-find particularly in the case of an Bosch model like ours. Alternately, GM's version this part is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a number of problems in your vehicle. It's an essential component of the transmission in your audi keyfob, as it transmits information to the ECU about how fast or slowly the car's engine is turning. This sensor can cause the transmission to malfunction and other components of the car to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire.
