World of Warcraft Item Upgrades
Item upgrades are a key part of gearing up your character. Upgrades boost damage to items and the ability to enchant.
They also provide bonuses and improvements. The Blacksmith can also sell them to you.
The upgrade button can be found on any item. Every recycled item level upgrade adds one level to the upgrade gauge.
Weapon
If a weapon is upgraded, it receives a base damage bonus, as well as a scaling factor which affects other stats. The weapon can also gain a variety of upgrade components that provide additional features or effects and some even have distinctive cosmetic effects. These upgrades can be put into armor, weapons trinkets, and gathering tools. Most require that the equipment has an available upgrade slot and meet certain requirements. If a weapon piece has an upgrade component in it, the item can be replaced with another but the prior upgrade will be destroyed (except for legendary equipment and upgrades). Upgrade components can be retrieved through the Black Lion Salvage Kit, Ascended Salvage tool, or a higher-tier salvaging tool for an item.
In addition to the normal upgrades, a weapon can be upgraded by adding the Calibration Attribute which improves certain stats like Weakspot Damage or Crit Rate. This is done through the Gear Workbench interaction menu. Depending on the weapon tier the process can be repeated up to four times.
When the weapon is at maximum upgrade, it can be rebuilt using a variety of different upgrade types to improve specific stats or add other bonuses and effects. These upgrades can be applied simultaneously, and their effects will vary depending on how rare the weapon is.
There are two Blacksmiths in the game who can perform these upgrades: Blacksmith Hewg in the Church of Elleh hub area as well as Smithing Master Iji on the Road to the Manor Site of Grace. Both require different upgrade materials: Smithing Stones for standard weapons and Somber Smithing Stones to alter the damage that a weapon inflicts.
In general, it's advisable to increase the damage of your weapon first. Then you can improve your armour defense and finally those secondary stats that are required by your build. It is not uncommon to see melee Druids upgrade their weapon before upgrading other equipment. This helps maximize DPS. This is particularly applicable to enchantments, which can be very efficient in increasing the weapon's damage and other stats.
