Choosing a Large Bedside Cot
Bedside cots (also called co-sleepers or bassinets) are designed to let parents snuggle with their infant at night without risk of SIDS. They are recommended for up to 6 months, after which your baby will be ready to move to an actual bed.
Mehack is an MFM home tester, was impressed by the fact that this model features an integrated bassinet that can be used around the house. It also features an option to rock manually. It was easy to assemble and it came with a travel bag.
Size
Cots and cot beds differ in size, with cots being smaller than beds for cots. Cots can also be transformed into toddler beds. However, cots are usually only used for children up to the age of three. There are two sizes of wooden cots - big and standard that can be transformed into a toddler bed or cot. The larger one is a good option for children who want to sleep in it until they are approximately three.
MFM mom home test Jasmine liked that this bedside cot was a little bigger than a Moses basket but not too large for her baby's room. It's easy to lift her baby in and out for feeding or soothing, and that the quality is excellent in comparison to other cots she's seen that are flimsy.
Another home test subject, Emily, likes how the Maxi-Cosi Lora can be used in a variety of ways It's a bassinet that lifts off that can be moved around the home, and it's a blast too. It also comes with an incline for reflux and a machine washable liner that breathes. It was also nominated for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot or Moses Basket category. The Lora is a perfect fit for a South African cot mattress unlike some international or European brands. This means that you do not need to purchase a new mattress every time your baby grows. However, it requires an exclusive bedding set (60x120cm). Here you can find the ideal mattress for your cot.
Height
When you are choosing a crib that is small bedside cot make sure it can be adjusted to the ideal height for you. It must also be able to be dropped down to allow you to lift your baby closer to you during night feedings or soothing. This is particularly useful in the event of recovering from a C Section. For instance the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted up to a height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm, and the Knuma Huddle up to 70cm.
Another thing to consider is how low you want the base of your cot. Some mothers find it is easier to lift their infants from standard Moses baskets when the base is at the lowest level, while others prefer a higher level to give them more stability. One of our testers for mums mentioned that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular option. It is a collapsible side you can press at the push of one button.
Be aware that a bedside or bassinet should not be used until your baby is able to hold their head up unaided generally about 6 months. This is due to the danger of inhaling suffocation. It's also important to know that if you choose a bassinet/bedside sleeper that can be converted into a crib and vice versa, you must start removing the sides when your child is ready for this, so that they don't climb out or fall out of the bed.
Design
There are many styles of cribs for bedside use, ranging from simple to luxurious. Some of the more luxurious options include features like a built-in light and a soothing center that plays music and sound and comes with two levels that help to soothe your baby back to sleep. Another option is an adjustable footrest that makes it easier for you to reach your child in order to feed them. Some models can be transformed into an infant bed or cot (or both) when your child is ready to go to their own bed.
For instance the Tutti Bambini CoZee Air which was awarded Bronze in the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket category, has an adjustable base that allows you to pick up your baby and transfer them from one side of the crib to the other without having to get up. This is ideal for new mums recovering from Caesarean sections or who have to remain in bed for long periods of time. MFM mum home tester Jasmine loved this feature, stating that it was easy to use and made reaching her baby much easier - especially after her c-section.
Another option is the Chicco Next2me Magic, which was awarded Gold at the 2021 Mother&Baby Award in the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket. It also includes an easy-to-clean liner, reflux incline and rocking function. It's bigger than other bedside cribs that we've tested, however it folds up into its travel bag to make it compact when not in use.
Leya, MFM mum home tester, also praised the bedside crib's functionality. She claimed that it was designed for parents and babies. 'It has an excellent design that is extremely easy to manoeuvre and it is extremely sturdy. She said that the bassinet's pivoting base was brilliant because it let you move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lowered to make access easier for moms who are recovering from C-sections.
Safety
A large bedside cot's main safety characteristic is the fact that it can easily be adjusted or moved so that parents can reach their baby to feed, comfort or change his or his or her diaper. This is ideal for mothers who are recovering from a C-section. It is recommended to choose an option that lets you lower the bed's side by pressing a button. This will allow you to raise your child without getting out of bed. This is particularly important as your baby gets older and becomes more mobile. Do not add anything that may increase the risk of injury or suffocation such as pillowcases and duvets, which can cause your baby to overheat.
The CPSC's NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to issues with the product like gaps between a bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside baby sleeper sleeper (12 incidents) and enclosed openings with fabric sides (11) and consumer misassembly (6 incidents).
In its NPR, the CPSC examined the possibility of additional requirements for bedside sleepers, like the requirement that these products satisfy the minimum side height requirement for bassinets, or at a minimum, meet the maximum height requirement for the lowered side rail. However, the CPSC determined that these requirements are not efficient or feasible to reduce the amount of instances in which infants were entrapped between a bedside sleeper and an adult bed.
A majority of the incidents mentioned in the NPR included multi-use bedside beds which can be converted to other types of equipment, like play yards or bassinets. Several commenters suggested that the CPSC include in the proposed rule an alternative option for multiuse bedside sleepers to enable them to meet the minimum side-height requirement for bassinets using a removable attachment that can be connected permanently or disconnected when the product is not being used as a bassinet.
The CPSC is currently examining these and other comments received in response to its NPR regarding bedside sleepers. The Commission will take into account these comments when voting on the final rule, which is expected to be published in November 2021.
