The sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can activate spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain of timing. However, the error code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult as there are two different connector pins and they have different functions however the best method to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this sensor, look for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, I experienced massive power loss like the engine is running out of gas or injectors are not firing anymore. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs. Three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth one was dry. When I start the engine with no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th stay closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows an ice temperature of -49c. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I think I've eliminated everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or from a parts store. It is easy to test them: Audi A3 Keys simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, for example. To accomplish this, it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.

A failing G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox, a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, or a misfire while in the gear. Also, you can check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should see approximately 1000 ohms resistance between those points.
