Many of the top rated Robot Vacuum performers in our tests have decent obstacle avoidance.

1. Roomba iRobot i3+ from iRobot EVO

The i3+ EVO and its i3 EVO sibling, the i3 EVO are the same robots, but they differ in that the i3+ comes with self cleaning vacuum-emptying features. This makes the i3+ a good option for those who want an automated cleaning, hands-free cleaning experience but don't mind having to empty their dust bin manually as it gets full.

Both robots do well picking up surface debris on carpets and hard floors and they are very good at getting around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software creates a smart maps of your home that help the i3+ navigate and clean up efficiently. However unlike the i7+ or other top-rated robots that we tested the i3+ doesn't have obstacle-avoidance capabilities and therefore it could get stuck on things like socks or power cords, and may have issues navigating across surface transitions like hardwood to rug.

iRobot recommends you clear out areas in which the i3+ EVO will vacuum before you use it, and include clearing out any toys or clutter it may come across. It is also recommended to keep the dustbin and filters free of dirt to prevent them from becoming clogged. When the i3+ EVO's internal bin is empty or the battery is not fully charged, it returns to the docking station, and it automatically takes the dirt out of the docking station’s external dustbin. Then it continues cleaning where it started. Battery life is about an hour and a half of continuous use. It takes about three hours to fully charge.

2. IRobot Roomba i7+

The iRobot Roomba i7+ is the most powerful model in the iRobot flagship line and comes with all the latest features. It is self-charging and self-navigating, but the most significant feature is its self cleaning vacuum-emptying bin. This removes the need for routine maintenance.

The Roomba i7+ can remember up to 10 floor plans and their names thanks to Imprint Smart Mapping, a system that allows it to create maps of rooms so that it can clean them more efficiently. It also works with iRobot Home to schedule cleaning jobs, and you can control your robot through the app or via voice.

In our testing, the i7+ was quicker and more maneuverable than our second-placed model and the eufy RoboVac G30, and it took large pieces of pet hair from all surface types including carpeting. Its biggest advantage over the eufy it self-empties its dust bin which removes a major source of maintenance and lowers the amount of time spent cleaning.

We were also impressed with the i7+'s compatibility Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant AI services. We utilized these services to instruct the robot to start or stop cleaning sessions as well as move around the room and to vacuum a particular area. The iRobot Home App made it easy to connect the i7+ to these services. When connected to these services, we were able communicate with the i7+ using voice commands, such as "Hey Alexa, vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home app also provides options to manage the i7+'s preferences and monitoring its performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

In a world of cordless vacs that look like minivans or buses, this small Dyson model is an old-fashioned sports car. It's powerful and has features to replace a stand-up vacuum in many households, but it also fits nicely on the table for a coffee or shelves where you can wave it around like an enchanted tool.

The V10 is powered by a seven-cell, energy-dense lithium-ion battery which produces energy that is not faded for 60 minutes. The sophisticated whole-machine filter system captures allergens, and then releases fresh air into your home. The specialized head uses rigid nylon bristles that penetrate deep into carpets and pick up large dust or crumbs. It comes with three suction settings to suit the task being performed. It quickly converts from handheld to floor vacuum and back again.

The model comes with a dock which charges the Dyson to 100% within 3.5 hours. It also provides easy access to 2 attachments and the wand. This is a significant improvement over previous Dysons which require a long charge and are difficult to store.

The main drawback of the V10 is its limited run time. Its marketing claims that it has up to 60 minutes of running time are not true as CR's tests have shown. This is a standard, not exceptional, battery-powered vacuum's run time. This is enough time to sweep a typical-sized home, but not enough to reach every area. (A second time is usually sufficient). This model has its own advantages however: it's light and more maneuverable than older Dysons cordless models and its ability to vacuum is noticeable superior on carpets with low pile.

4. iRobot Roomba 694"

One of iRobot's most popular robot vacuums, the 694 is an entry-level model that's an excellent choice for people who don't want to spend too much on a robotic. It was able to remove most types of debris and sizes in our testing and often went over the same area several times to give an efficient clean. Its flat front allows it to reach the corners and edges of walls.

Its navigation system is smart and uses iAdapt to stay clear of obstacles and navigate your home, but it isn't equipped with the mapping capability of more sophisticated models like our top picks and the i3+ EVO and j7+ series. Because of this, it is sometimes stuck on things like phone cords and furniture that isn't in good condition, and frequently will run out of battery before returning to its home base.

The Xiaomi Mi robot is superior in many ways over the Roomba 694 in that it has fewer parts that require regular cleaning, is outfitted with an allergen-trapping HEPA filtering system, has a lower costs for recurring expenses, is more sophisticated in its automation capabilities and is better able to maneuver its own. It also has a bigger dustbin and charges faster.

The sleek RoboVac X8 has a superior battery longevity than the Roomba 694. It also comes with physical boundaries and can be controlled by the voice assistant on your smartphone. It is also more robust, has a more powerful motor, and is more effective on low-pile and bare floors.

5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+

Samsung is a name is seen on a variety of electronic gadgets for your home So it's no surprise that they're one of the most popular robotic vacuum and mop makers. Their Jet Bot AI+ is packed with cutting-edge onboard technology for navigation and obstacle avoidance.

The app offers a wide range of options for customizing your robotic cleaner. These include virtual barriers, mopping levels and behavior customizations, docking frequency settings and more. It's easy to understand and easy to use, just as is the case with other Samsung devices.

In our tests of the Jet Bot AI+ excelled on hard floors and handled dog hair (on carpet) very well, picking up 86 percent of it. It didn't do very well in avoiding taller objects like cords or socks. This was disappointing. It's also a little more expensive than some of the other models we've tested and could be a problem for certain shoppers.

The smart vacuum has an onboard camera that you can access through the app, and you can also set up a live stream from the robot vacuum cleaner's cleaning station. This feature allows you to monitor your pets or children when you're away from home. The dustbin and the filter can be washed for the quick and easy cleaning. The Jet Bot AI+ comes with an best automatic vacuum clean station which helps keep the robot's bin clear and maximizes suction power.

6. Black & Decker Robot Vacuum

Contrary to other robotic vacuums which are designed for both hard floors and carpets, Black and Decker robots are specifically designed for hard floors. They feature an extra-wide cleaning path and a larger dustbin that holds 2X more debris than competitors to keep the cleaning area clear for maximum runtime. They also have two side sweepers to clean around corners and edges. The POWERSERIES Extreme model comes with AutoSense technology, which detects if it's picking up surface litter or embedded dirt and automatically adjusts its power level. It also comes with a smart app that lets you see the virtual map and manage the functions and schedules. You can also monitor the vacuum's status and send it to its dock for charging with the click of a button. The app lets you alter the LED lights on the top of the vacuum to discern where it is focusing or if it has gotten stuck.

The app also makes it easy to manually steer the robot should you need to. My living room rug, for instance is darkly colored that could cause trouble for other robots. The HRV 425BL however continued to travel across the border without registering the cliff. Also, the ability to set up weekly cleaning schedules is a fantastic time-saving feature.
