Path of Exile item upgrade Upgrades
The performance of a variety of Path of Exile items can be improved by upgrading the performance of them. They can also provide additional damage, AD or even affixes.
Often times however upgraded Common and Magic gear is often surpassed by Rare-grade gear due to their requirements.
Armor
Armor upgrades can be applied to both weapon and armor items. They increase the effectiveness of the item upgrader mod they are connected to. Upgrades to armor are available in the game's world and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at any bonfire. They can also be salvaged using a professional or higher salvage kit to retrieve upgrade components from other items.
The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it will take on. The ability to absorb damage of a piece armor will increase when it is upgraded to the maximum upgrade level. However, it's important to keep in mind that this will increase its weight, which will cause it to be heavier than before.
There are several types of armor upgrades that are available in the game and they all have different effects. For instance, certain upgrades will give the armor a certain number of health points while others will make it stronger and lighter. The type of armor upgrade that an item can get will be identified by the name of the upgrade, as indicated in the table below.
A few of the upgrades are also magic or a hybrid of technology and magic which is indicated by an "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Additionally, some upgrades require a charge to use, which are shown by the "Charges" entry in the table below. The charges for these upgrades refresh daily or never expire, according to the upgrade.
Iron Ore is the cheapest way to improve your armor. You can locate it by exploring and looting small chests. Titanium is more expensive, however, it is available through smelters in Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Some upgrades, like the Reforge or the Hot Potato Books can only be applied on armor pieces of the highest level. These upgrades can give significant improvements in stats and are worth the investment, especially for 1-handed weapons.
Upgrading a piece of armor to the highest upgrade level will dramatically boost its defense but the wearer must be aware that putting more weight on it will drastically reduce its speed and agility. Therefore, it is not recommended to upgrade armor pieces that are higher than +9 because the increase in defense is generally not worth the weight and power cost of the upgrades required.
Weapons
Weapon upgrades allow players to improve the effectiveness of specific aspects of an weapon. For example an upgrade could increase the damage dealt by a shotgun's shells or the accuracy of a rifle sniper. Some weapons also have special enhancements that enhance their intrinsic capabilities. These include Frictionless Materials (improves stability and reduces the risk of overheating of the weapon) and Kinetic Coils (increases projectile acceleration for more damage).
The majority of upgrades for weapons require the use of a whetblade, or one of the three Power Dices and a different amount of Minerals and Erons. These can be obtained by completing Side Quests or by killing a certain number of bosses and monsters.
Upgrades to a weapon, equipment Set piece or Whetblade requires visiting the NPC [Armor] Boboko in Central Flarine and paying her an upgrade fee that is based on a specific number of Bars. The higher the upgrade level, the more bars required to complete it. The cost of upgrades will be lower if have more than one of the relevant upgrade materials.
In Chapter 2: Season 5 the way you upgrade your weapon and equipment sets has changed a bit. Prior to Chapter 2 Season 5, you could upgrade your weapon and equipment by paying a certain number of Bars. You could do this until you reach a maximum upgrade level for the weapon or equipment, after which the upgrades would be reset.
This is still possible, but it relies heavily on RNG. Instead, you're better off going to stores and buying gear with low upgrade levels but excellent base scores and stat distributions. These gears have a better chance of granting you the most prestigious tier of advantages and benefits.
To increase their level faster, many players prioritise upgrading their weapons. Additionally players, they should also consider upgrading the weapons that are most popular with their teammates to make them more powerful and effective. Shepard for instance, should upgrade the M92F so that he can unlock the Beretta M93R. This will make the weapon more effective when used with biotic specialists such as Grunt and Tali.
Jewels
Jewels are used in the armor's sockets and weapons, increasing a stat and providing secondary effects. Jewelry crafting is the process of creating them. You combine a gemstone with a number specific reagents in a jewelry table. The higher the quality of the jewel the better the secondary effect. These reagents are obtained in the world from Treasure Goblins, World Bosses and, sometimes, by salvaging Legendary gear. You can also purchase them from The Jeweler for gold and a Scattered Prism.
The Jeweler can enhance the quality of gemstones in stages ranging from Crude up to Royal. Based on the tier of the jewel it can provide different stat boost when slotted into weapons, gear and jewelry.
All tiers of jewels are crafted at the Jeweler however, there are some exceptions to this, such as the rare and legendary jewels which require you to be at a high enough level to be able to get them. Jewels can be replaced by another one without damaging the original. You can only replace the gem only once in a piece of equipment.
Using more jewels in the movement can make it feel more comfortable, and is often used for aesthetic reasons. The jewels can also enhance performance and create an outer layer that is more durable than steel, so that the repeated friction caused by pivots does not damage them.
In addition to the above-mentioned upgrades, the player can also get glyphs for their shields and weapons from a Glyphmaster. These glyphs provide a small boost in power and can be exchanged, however they're not guaranteed to be available as loot. Glyphs can be upgraded as jewelry, by visiting the Jeweler for gold, and also Scattered Crystal. Glyphs can also be removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, such as aegis and traits, are not swappable, and can only be retrieved using an Upgrade Extractor, or by salvaging them using the Black Lion Salvage Kit or an Ascended Salvage Tool.
Trinkets
Trinkets are small pieces of equipment that offer an array of small, but beneficial benefits to your hero. They can be obtained in the areas of starting as loot or personal story rewards from vendors, or by doing road interactions. They can also be found on the Trading Post, or crafted by jewelers.
The first trinket a player is able to unlock is the cloak. It grants an unimportant but beneficial boost to speed of movement and the ability to escape. After that, they'll be able to acquire rings, amulets, and necklaces in a similar fashion to how the player acquires armor and weapons. Each piece of gear comes with one upgrade slot that can accommodate either a universal or jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades provide smaller bonuses and can be used in any type of equipment, however, jewelry cannot be replaced or upgraded and only works with certain kinds of trinkets.
These trinkets also provide additional bonuses and abilities that are active when the hero is not fighting. This allows the hero to be more effective while inactive, and can also help make up for a lack of a strong team or the absence of any slots in the talent tree that would normally be filled with hero's ideal stats.
As a rule, trinket upgrades should prioritize BiS (Best in Slot) items that you aren't likely to replace anytime soon. Also, consider items with desirable statistics that aren't as significant as the iLevel of the Item Upgrader Kit that is to be upgraded. This is especially true when an item upgrader kit has multiple stats that you wish to upgrade, since it's generally better to upgrade a single important stat than two sub-optimal ones.
At the beginning of the game, players in the jungle are likely to upgrade their yellow trinket to a red, while top and mid players usually choose a green or pink ward (depending on the game's matchup). These choices can impact a hero's ability to control the map.
In addition to the items listed above, players can also find other trinkets throughout the game in the form of trophies and awards. These can be earned by completing certain milestones in the story. For instance, completing a chapter’s main quest or defeating an opponent. You can view them by selecting the achievement in the reward section of the hero's menu.
