Path of Exile Item Upgrades

Item upgrades are a common and important way to improve the performance of a variety of items in Path of Exile. They can provide extra damage, AD or even affixes.

In most cases, however, upgraded Common and Magic gear is outclassed by Rare-grade equipment due to their higher requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades are a kind of upgrade that can be used on weapon and armor items. They boost the performance of the item they're connected to. Armor upgrades are available in the world of the game and are available from Blacksmiths on bonfires. They can also be salvaged using an expert or higher salvage kit to recover upgrade components from other items.

The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it will take on. The ability to absorb damage of an item of armor will increase when it's upgraded to its maximum upgrade level. It is important to keep in mind that this will increase the weight of the armor, therefore it should be heavier.

There are several different types of armor upgrades that are available in the game. Each has a different effect. Certain upgrades grant armor an extra amount of health points while others make it stronger and lighter. The type of armor upgrade that an item can receive will be indicated by the name of the upgrade as indicated in the table below.

Some of the upgrades are also magic or a mix of technology and magic, which is identified by a "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Some upgrades also require charges to use. These are identified as "Charges" entries in the table. The charges associated with these upgrades change every day or never expire, dependent on the upgrade.

The cheapest way to upgrade armor is to use Iron Ore, which can be found by exploring the area and looting small loot chests. Titanium is more expensive however, it is available at the smelters of Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Certain upgrades, like the Reforge or the Hot Potato Books can only be applied on armor pieces of the highest level. These upgrades can provide significant increases in stats and are well worth the cost.

The process of upgrading an armor piece to the highest upgrade level will greatly increase its defense capabilities however, the user must be aware that putting more weight on it will dramatically reduce its speed and agility. For this reason, it is not recommended to upgrade most armor pieces that are higher than +9 since the defensive boost gained is typically not worth the weight and power costs of the upgrades required.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades allow players the ability to improve certain aspects of their weapon. For example an upgrade can increase the damage dealt by a shotgun's shells or the accuracy of a rifle sniper. Some weapons also have special upgrades that improve their innate characteristics. They include Frictionless Materials (improves stability and reduces the risk of weapon overheating) and Kinetic Coils (increases the speed of projectiles to cause more damage).

Most upgrades for weapons require one of three Power Dices, a different amount of Minerals and Erons, and a whetblade. These are obtained through either completing Side Quests, taking out a certain number of monsters or bosses, or from the Weapon Upgrade NPC located in Central Flarine.

Upgrades to a weapon, equipment Set piece or Whetblade requires visiting the NPC [Armor] Boboko in Central Flarine and paying her an upgrade cost of a certain number of Bars. The more bars required to complete an upgrade the more advanced the level. If you have multiple upgrade materials, the cost of upgrading will be lower.

In Chapter 2: Season 5, the way you upgrade items your weapon and equipment sets has changed a bit. Prior to Chapter 2 Season 5, you could upgrade your weapon and equipment by paying a certain amount of Bars. You could do this until the weapon or equipment reached its maximum upgrade level, at which point the upgrades would be reset.

You can still do this, but the process is high on RNG and low on agency. Instead, you're much better off going to stores and purchasing equipment that has low upgrade levels but excellent base scores and stat distributions. These will have a chance at gaining you the most prestigious perks and blessings.

Most players will want to make the most of upgrades to weapons they use most frequently to allow them to progress quicker. Players should also upgrade the weapons their teammates use to boost their strength. Shepard, for example, should upgrade the M92F to unlock the Beretta M93R. This will increase the effectiveness of the weapon when used in conjunction with biotic specialists like Grunt and Tali.

Jewels

Jewels are used in the armor's sockets and weapons, enhancing a stat and providing secondary effects. They can be created using an process known as jewelry crafting, in which you combine a gemstone and several ingredients at a table for jewelry. The higher the level of the gem is, the greater its secondary effect. These reagents are obtained in the world through Treasure Goblins, World Bosses and occasionally by salvaging Legendary gear. You can also purchase them from The Jeweler in exchange for gold and Scattered Prisms.

The Jeweler can improve the quality of gemstones in stages ranging from Crude up to Royal. Based on the tier of the jewel it can provide different stat boost when slotted into weapons, equipment and jewelry.

All levels of jewels are crafted at the Jeweler however, there are some exceptions to this, such as the rare and legendary jewels that require you to be at a certain level to qualify for them. Jewels can be replaced with another jewel without destroying the original. You can only replace the gem only once in a piece of equipment.

Utilizing more jewels in a movement will make it feel smoother and is usually used for aesthetic reasons. In addition to improving performance, the diamonds create an outer layer that is more durable than metal, which means that repeated friction with pivots doesn't cause damage as easily.

A Glyphmaster can offer glyphs to improve the appearance of your weapons and shields. They offer a small benefit and are able to be swapped easily however they aren't guaranteed to drop as loot. Glyphs can be upgraded like jewelry, at the Jeweler for gold and Scattered Crystal. Glyphs may also be removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, such as traits or aegis cannot be exchanged and can only be recovered through an upgrade extractor or salvaging using the Black Lion Salvage Kit or an Ascended Salvage.

Trinkets

Trinkets are small pieces of equipment that provide an array of small, but beneficial benefits to your hero. They can be acquired starting in the starter areas as loot, personal story rewards, from vendors, and through completing road interactions. They can also be crafted by jewelers and later found or purchased from the Trading Post.

The first trinket a player is able to unlock is the cloak, which grants an unimportant but beneficial boost in speed of movement and the ability to escape. The player will then be able to acquire rings, amulets and necklaces in a similar manner to how they acquired weapons and armor. Each piece of gear comes with one upgrade slot that can accept either a universal or a jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades offer fewer benefits and can be placed in any type of equipment however, jewelry cannot be replaced or upgraded and only works with certain kinds of trinkets.

These trinkets provide additional buffs and abilities that are active even when the hero isn't engaged in combat. This allows a hero to be more efficient while inactive. It also helps compensate for the absence of good team or talent tree slots which are usually filled by the hero's best stats.

As a rule trinket upgrades should be prioritized over BiS (Best in Slot) items that you aren't likely to replace in the near future. Next, any items with desirable statistics that are less significant than the iLevel for the item upgrader that is to be upgraded. This is particularly true if an item level upgrade has multiple stats you'd like to upgrade as it's usually more beneficial to upgrade one crucial stat than two subpar ones.

Jungle players will often upgrade their yellow trinket to a red one at the start of the game. Mid and top players on the other hand they will select a pink or green ward, based on the game's matchup. These choices can impact a hero's ability to control the map.

In addition to the items mentioned above, players will also find other trinkets that form of rewards and trophies throughout the game. These can be earned by completing certain milestones in the story. For instance, finishing a chapter’s main quest or defeating the boss. You can check them out by clicking on the achievement in the reward section of the hero's menu.
