How to Replace an audi keyless entry G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It's a bit tricky to test since there are several pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when the sensor is in full operation. If you are having problems with this component, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll i had an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing any more. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, three were drenched in gazoline, the fourth was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole, and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one stays shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car key cover audi can start when the G28 is unplugged and runs fine when it is plugged in, but still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c, even if I unplug it. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, i feel i have pretty much eliminated everything else. But i am afraid I might have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate the spare in a salvage shop or a parts store. It is easy to test them - just put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. In order to do this it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you are experiencing issues with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could cause an engine shut down.

The signs of a failing G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter, gears shifting quicker than normal, and/or a misfire when in gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you notice any of these symptoms. The good thing is that they are quite affordable and easily accessible particularly in the case of a Bosch sensor, like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this unit is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a variety of issues in your vehicle. It's an essential component of the transmission of your audi car key Case, as it transmits information to the ECU on how fast or slow the car's engine is turning. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should detect an average resistance of 1000 ohms between these two points. This is a standard component across the audi a3 keys 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU, so the best ones might be availble in wrecking yards.
