How to Replace an audi car key cover G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated near the transmission's edge just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It is a little tricky to test as there are several pins on the connector and each has its own functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is fully functional, it should read around 1000 ohms. Check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, 3 were soaked with gazoline and the fourth one was dry. When I crank the engine with no sparks, i place a tissue on top of each injector hole, the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th stays shut. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it is running fine with the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, as i believe that i've completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or in a local parts store. Testing them is easy to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must know the position and speed the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of fuel injectors, etc. To accomplish this, it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you have a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause an engine shutdown.

Some of the symptoms of a failed G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or misfiring when in gear. If you are experiencing any of these problems, it is likely that your sensor is failing and needs replacing. They are cheap and easy-to-find particularly when they're a Bosch model like ours. Alternately, the GM version of this part is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues in your car key cover Audi.
